Ellie, a beautiful 1-year-old Blue Lacy dog, was living with her family in Dallas, Texas. Then one day, they decided that they could no longer care for Ellie and they dropped her off at a local shelter.

19. One Friend

The only friend that Ellie had was a stuffed toy bear that her family had left behind with her. It was her only friend in the whole world and she clung to the bear with all of her might.

18. Surprised

It was pretty shocking that the family had decided to just drop off Ellie at the shelter. The family had already gone out of their way to vaccinate and spay the dog. It was an upsetting situation overall.

17. Great Lengths

They had gone to the trouble of getting all her shots, her spay surgery and microchip … [then] they just dumped her at the closest shelter after having her for months,” Jennifer Jessup, an independent dog rescuer based in New York City, told The Dodo.

She basically lost everything she’s ever known, and at 1 year old, [she] found herself in a loud, scary place where they euthanize for space.” The poor pup was all on her own with no one to comfort her.

15. Bad Experience

A shelter can be a pretty horrifying experience for dogs, especially such a young one. The loud noises and lack of personal space can easily weigh down on them. It wasn’t an easy adjustment for Ellie.

Ellie had a rough time adjusting to the shelter. In order to cope with the stress, she would often be seen clinging to her stuffed bear. She refused to let the bear out of her sight…

She was so scared, and she was just clinging to it,” Jessup said. “It was the only thing she had.” Then, things suddenly took a turn for the better…

12. Looking Out

Fortunately for Ellie, she wouldn’t have to spend too much time at the shelter. Around this time, Jessup’s brother, who lives in Florida, was on the lookout for a Blue Lacy dog to adopt.

Jessup reached out to his sister for help in finding a Blue Lacy dog. She quickly began to scour through online groups and with the help of TAGG Rescue, a Dallas-based rescue group, she was able to find Ellie.

I had a friend in Texas that I contacted, and he said, ‘Sure, I’ll go pick her up,’” Jessup explained. This was just the beginning of a new and improved life for little Ellie. Soon Ellie was taken out of the shelter.

So he got her out of the shelter with her teddy bear, and took her to this boarding facility, where they gave her a bath and made sure all of her paperwork was in order, and that she was fully vetted.”

8. Foster Home

After spending time at the boarding facility, Ellie was placed in a foster home. She remained in the foster home until everything had been set into place for her move to Florida.

7. A Bit Better

Once Ellie was inside of an actual home she began to feel a bit better. However, she still clung to her stuffed animal.

6. A Photo

The foster carer took a photo of her without her teddy bear, and she was curled up in a little ball, just scared to death,” Jessup said. “But when he put her back with her teddy bear, she just grabs it.”

5. New Dad

Finally, it was time for Ellie to meet her dad! TWD Transport, a company that moves rescue dogs around the country, brought Ellie all the way over to Florida. Jessup’s brother was beyond excited!

4. Getting Comfortable

She is exhausted and my brother is going to spend the day with her trying to perk her up,” Jessup said. “She’s very timid and the trip was a difficult one, so it will take a while for her to come out of her shell.”

3. Perfect Home
