The first Barbie doll was introduced in both blonde and brunette versions in March 1959. Ruth Handler watched her daughter Barbara play with paper dolls, and noticed that she often enjoyed giving them grown up roles. At the time, most children’s toy dolls were representations of infants. The barbie doll phenomena changed all that forever. Dolls were now blue eyed, blond and very cute indeed.
