Installation art at home: Designing your photoshoot

Three-dimensional art isn’t only limited to sculptures or pottery, as artists also branch out into installation art. These pieces of art are usually displayed in interior or exterior sites and designed in a way that changes or enhances the perception of a space. Installation art pieces create a relationship with their surrounding environment and the audience on a social, intellectual, conceptual or architectural level.

Whether the installation artwork is permanent or temporary, they’re usually found in museums and galleries, but also in unusual places out in public. These non-traditional installation pieces are the ones that are immersive and blend in with the environment by including the viewer/audience in the experience. A great example of this is during Christmas when many commercial places will customize a huge Christmas tree, have a nativity scene, or buy reindeer with sleigh to adorn the space, but also to provide a festive scene for the public.

Most of the time these installations are created with different media and techniques. Beautiful creations have been known to come out of unusual things like found objects, readymade items, grass, dirt, electronics, dance and light. Because we’re in a digital age, the newest form of media is audio and visual technologies, like videos or sounds.

Designing your home art installation

Of course, art is known to be expensive and not everyone has access to it, but it’s still liberal. Because everyone has their interpretation of art pieces displayed before them, there’s no limit as to how a home installation should be designed. The interpretation is based on personal preference, style and vision. As mentioned earlier, there’s no limit to what can be used to create installation art; if dirt and grass can create spectacular, eye-catching art pieces then a home art installation shouldn’t necessarily break the bank to be pleasing.

There’s no need to make the trip somewhere to capture an interesting picture for social media, as a room in the home can be made over to create an awe-spiring backdrop. Here are some pointers for designing a home art installation that can be used as a theme or backdrop for a social gathering or just for a personal photoshoot.

Walls of art

There are a lot of wonderful and exciting things you can do with a wall. Just like installation art, whatever is designed can be permanent or temporary. A bare wall will need some brainstorming as the opportunities are endless, but the main thing is to stay in the lines of your vision and overall look. Empty picture frames could be a great starting point as these can be painted and accessorized and then hung in different directions; playing with the shapes, sizes and materials could bring some asymmetry and depth.

A wall with shelving could produce numerous scenes and moods as some of the empty spaces can be filled with different objects and some can be left bare. The chosen items could be linked to a theme, if the theme is spring, for example, don’t just put in different flowers; play around a bit by picking the least expected colors to represent the season.

Lookup

What better way to make an art statement in a house than by bringing attention to something that’s often neglected- the ceiling. Especially if the room is blessed with a high ceiling, there’s a lot that can be done with all that vertical space! Hanging installations might be the way to go for this as they can be as intimate or grandiose as the imagination desires. In this case, an art installation for the ceiling could be temporary and used to be a conversation starter at events.

Consider the stairs

A great backdrop for those Instagram pictures is the stairs. Starting with the wall space alongside a staircase, a monochromatic feel with prints and staggered frames at a gentle incline can bring a dramatic effect. If it’s possible to paint, bold colors on the steps and balustrades will make all the difference. For maximum effect, add saturation by mixing tones and patterns with objects you can find around the house for more depth.

These are just a few examples of how and where the design of installation art inside your home could take place. This calls upon the activation of your imagination and the ability to interpret your vision into a 3D realization, and for this, the choices in techniques and materials don’t have an end.

Conclusion

Installation art can help to change and enhance the perception of spaces. Its not only confined to homes but it can also be applied in public spaces like halls or parks and in turn provoking the senses of viewers.
