My mom has this strange theory that no one else in England speaks French, so she tends to talk trash about strangers- since she thinks they won’t understand. Most of the time they don’t; but one time in the subway she started mugging off this guy with a handlebar mustache who was sitting on the other side of me, next to his friend. I told her in French to stop, because what she was saying was making me feel uncomfortable. She laughed out loud, telling me that English people only know “half a language.” The guy with the mustache then started talking really loudly to his friend in French.
