Swedish Student Designs a Flag for Earth (and it’s Awesome!)

A Swedish student named, Oskar Pernefeldt from Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm decided to take the task of branding the Earth’s own flag as his graduation project. The end result is a simple but beautiful white geometric design on top of a cobalt blue background.

With 196 Countries in the World, they each have their own unique flag to represent each of them it’s only a matter of time before our planet has it’s own flag! The International Flag of Earth looks amazing! and will surely be a brilliant flag when the human race explores the depth of space!

The final design wasn’t an isn’t task, Pernefeldt’s design proposal explains the science named, vexillology. He decided to take this into consideration when creating the International Flag of Planet Earth. He explains:

Centered in the flag, seven rings form a flower – a symbol of the life on Earth. The rings are linked to each other, which represents how everything on our planet, directly or indirectly, are linked. The blue field represents water which is essential for life – also as the oceans cover most of our planet’s surface. The flower’s outer rings form a circle which could be seen as a symbol of Earth as a planet and the blue surface could represent the universe.

flag-1

It’s made specifically to look awesome in space.

And on your street. But also … SPACE.

It’s bright blue, like water.

It’s not light blue, not dark blue…

…but a special blue to stand out against the black of space and the shiny white-ness of space suits.

Because, obviously, spacemen and spacewomen will be sporting this flag!

It has interconnected circles.

By itself, a circle is just a circle. But when many circles comes together, they make a beautiful flower.

What does all that design-talk mean?

It can be easy to feel insignificant when you contemplate the vastness of Earth and all our differences, problems, people, and things. But really, we should feel SO unique and rare and important!

We Earthlings are all these circles, and when we come together, we make something beautiful.

That’s why I’m into this.

The international flag of Earth might be the very first flag we have that doesn’t pit any of us against each other.

A flag that doesn’t mean US versus THEM, but a flag that’s a pure celebration of us.

Earthlings. Together.

Here’s a beautiful short video about how the flag was designed. It’s kinda hypnotizing.
