Visit San Francisco : Lombard Street

[/tps_title]

Gracing many a postcard and snapshot, Lombard Street has a reputation as the world’s ‘crookedest’ street – although the validity of that claim is questionable.

Lombard Street is an east–west street in San Francisco, California that is famous around the world for a steep, one-block section with eight very tight hairpin turns. Lombard Street was named after Lombard Street in Philadelphia by early San Francisco surveyor Jasper O’Farrell.

Constructed in a zigzag pattern to combat the steepness between Hyde and Leavenworth streets, Lombard comprises eight hairpin turns, which are lined with brightly blossoming flowers year round.

Pedestrians navigate the stairs on either side where they can view the flowers and watch the cars navigate the turns in the road. If you’re after a photo, it’s best taken from the bottom, looking back up the hill.
