The best low-maintenance dog breeds for apartment living
As an animal lover, one of the things you want more than anything is to have a dog of your own. However, since you live in an apartment, you are convinced that it’s a dream that will never become a reality. This is so far from the truth though, because there are several breeds of dogs that are perfect for apartment dwellers! Some of these include:
Chihuahua
If you live in a bachelor pad, then I believe that this little canine, standing at just 5 to 8 inches tall and weighing in at around 6 pounds, is the perfect choice for you! Being a tiny breed, your bachelor pad will allow your chihuahua to have more than enough exercise.
If the weather is bad, then there are great exercises that you can do with your furry friend indoors. However, you will add to your dog’s happiness by taking him for a short walk outside sometimes. Do note though, that he will get tired, so be prepared to carry him back home!
Pug
These little dogs have loads of personality and are often referred to as the clowns of the canine world. Size-wise, pugs are about 10 to 13 inches tall, with plump bodies and stocky little legs. They love nothing better than curling up on the couch with their owner but are also happy to go for regular walks as well, which is a good thing because it will prevent them from becoming obese and unhealthy. According to petcarrierverdict.com, pugs are the ideal canine companions for those living in apartments.
Russian Toy
Bred for the sole purpose of curling up on their owner’s laps, the Russian Toy is a fragile little dog that is yet another great option if you live in a small apartment. One good thing however, is that there are long-or short-haired varieties to choose from, which is huge plus if you suffer from allergies.
Bear in mind, however, that although the Russian Toy is a tiny dog, it has a big attitude, so it’s a good idea to show him/her who’s boss from day one, or you will have a head-strong, stubborn little canine trying to run your life!!
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
If you’re a family with kids living in an apartment, then I would definitely recommend that you get one of these even-tempered, sweet little dogs. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will spend hours playing with your children and then be more than happy to curl up on the couch with you in the evenings. Even though they have longer hair than the above few options, their fur is silky-soft and when given a good brush on a regular basis, will not become matted at all.
Even though this breed is known to be good-natured, there is always a chance that your kids get nipped if they are being too rough with your pet.
Barbet
If you prefer a bigger dog, then this is the dog for you! The Barbet weighs around 35 to 65 pounds, is about 19 to 24.5 inches tall, and provides everything you would expect from a dog, even if you live in an apartment. These dogs are incredibly intelligent and are quick to learn all sorts of tricks and, provided that you take him for regular walks and play with him often, he will compromise and chill out quite happily in your apartment with you. Even though the Barbet needs regular grooming, it will be a pleasurable task and increase your bonding, because of his easy-going character.
