Sutherland Falls in New Zealand
[/tps_title]
Sutherland Falls is a waterfall near Milford Sound in New Zealand’s South Island. In the year 1880 Scottish backwoodsman Donald Sutherland was looking for a good travel route between Milford Sound and Lake Wakatipu when he glimpsed falling water in the distance through the forest area, the falls had been discovered at last.
At 580 metres in height the Sutherland Falls are easily one of the highest waterfalls in the world. They were long believed to be the tallest waterfall in New Zealand.
Sutherland was the first European explorer to cast eye on the falls. Consequently in his honor, these awesome waterfalls of the world now bear his name.
Sutherland Falls in New Zealand are not the easiest waterfalls to reach and explore. Much of New Zealand is mountainous, rugged terrain.
In fact the best way to get there is by helicopter or flyover if just taking photographs. The area surrounding Sutherland Falls is quite remote and set well away from tracks and roads.
