Some of the most amazing waterfalls in South America are the comparatively little known Ventisquero Colgante Falls. In the Spanish language, ‘ventisquero’ when translated means to travel to an area in a mountain where heavy snow falls. What makes the Ventisquero Falls particularly unique isn’t the fact that it’s in Chile but that it flows from an ancient 50,000 year old icy glacier.
These waterfalls in Chile start their run from the base of Ventisquero Colgante. This is known as ‘The Hanging Glacier’. From here the waters fall down from a hanging valley, sculpted by this same icy glacier.
The towering blue wall of this ancient glacier runs high above the Ventisquero Falls. Yet lower down but few hundred metres from the rock solid glacier ice, lush rainforest may be found. This is quite an amazing and unique contrast in terrain over a very short distance.
